HISTORY OF DOMBOSHABA FESTIVAL OF CULTURE AND HISTORY
The Domboshaba Festival of Culture and History is an
annual event that is held around September/October of every year to celebrate
and showcase the colourful culture of the Bakalanga. It is held near Domboshaba
Ruins, one of the many architectural remains of the proto-Kalanga who inhabited
much of the valleys of the Limpopo and its tributaries from about 1 000 years
ago.
Bakalanga culture dates back to more than 1 000 year ago, when the proto-Kalanga built what was to become Southern Africa’s first settled states known in archeologically circles as K2 (980 - 1150 AD) and Mapungubgwe (1150 -1300) in what is today northern Limpopo province of South Africa.
The festival has been held every year since 2000 and
continues to grow in popularity.
